I was excited by the first few notes of Eclectic Approach's "Cool," the first single off the band's brand new album. They were catchy, funky and showed honest promise. However, within another few seconds and the start of the lyrics, I was disappointed, which would turn out to be a recurring trend while listening to the album.
The band has a unique sound, blending funk, hip-hop, and alternative rock- and it works for the most part. The downside to what could have been a potentially enjoyable album was the lyrics. Cheesy pick-up lines and feel-good mantras are easy to pick out and hard to forget. "This is going to take awhile, we're gonna make some good love," rang in my head far after the song "It's On Tonight" finished. Oh, Eclectic Approach, how your smooth words woo me.
I thought that the album could only get better from here, but I was sorely mistaken when the song "Change" came up next. With a more mellow sound than the three previous songs, it reminded me of Gym Class Heroes. The lyrics weren't nearly as ridiculous as expected, so I relaxed and was ready to take in what I hoped would be a chill tune. I nearly choked on my drink when I realized that the song was about "the age of Obama."--far from eloquent and embarrassingly passe.
Concluding the album was the bonus track "Boobies." I'll let you imagine for yourself what lyric gold lay in store there.
