The scene- You love it, you hate it. You even hate to love it. Obviously, musicians do as well. It is clearly seen that bashing and trashing what we are is a popular sport and it is done quite frequently. But it’s alright, we don’t get offended. We simply laugh it off and sing along.
Panic! at the Disco’s “I Constantly Thank God for Estaban”
“If the scene were a parish, you’d all be condemned.”
This line pretty much explains what it is to be a scenester. It’s a love hate relationship and everyone is in on it. It’s a sin to be scene, but it’s just too fun and we all have to indulge. Who cares if we go to hell? I sure don’t.
David Bowie’s “I’m Afraid of Americans”
“Johnny combs his hair and Johnny wants p*ssy and cars. Johnny’s in America.” Lately it seems all anyone wants these days is sex and success, cars and bars. David Bowie’s “I’m Afraid of Americans” pretty much explains everyone’s fear of the scene. We’re selfish and we know it. Bring it on, Bowie.
Fall Out Boy’s “The Take Over, the Break’s Over”
I think everyone within ten miles of the Baltimore scene would gladly “style your wake for fashion magazines.” We’re all about style and we know it. Call it a flaw, but we call it perfection. Oh, and I failed to mention, “we don’t fight fair!”
Hadouken!’s “That Boy That Girl”
Around the scene you constantly see boys in “skinny fit jeans and dressed in pink.” It’s not just a coincidence that British pop-electronica band Hadouken! mentions this exact type of boy toy. Also a frequent is the typical “indie Cyndi” with a “Leggo,, haircut and polka dot dress.” I know, I know. You’re wondering “What the hell is a Leggo,, haircut?!” You’ve seen it, and you know you have— that blocky mullet-like mop that sits atop so many young girls’ heads these days. “Nobody danced. Everybody was far too cool,” Is it just me, or does this song scream the words “St. John’s Hamilton?”
The Late Night’s “Scene 101”
Not many of you remember this song seeing as it was TLN’s first big hit with vocalist Yamil. These boys have and always will throw down the in-your-face lyrics you’re looking for. “To those who express with love and distress- not excess, not excess!” The Baltimore scene is all about living in excess, but we don’t mind, boys. It’s our way of life and more than likely yours too.
The Molotov Cocktails’ “Dramedy”
“She’s just a rock ho, and then she reaches her all time low.”I don’t know about you, but I know plenty of girls in the scene who fall directly into that category. Sleeping with bands should be, and probably will become, and Olympic sport. It definitely is around here. Sleep around, get atossed around— that’s the name of the game and it always ends in tragedy. I’d definitely say the female pop-rock band knows their scene, then and now. [mm]
